Wood in Singapore is commonly used for flooring. Wood flooring in Singapore has often been referred to as parquet flooring, a classic French term introduced since 1684. In Singapore, timber flooring is very common in most houses, particularly the bedrooms. Compared to other types of flooring, natural wood supresses fluctuation of temperature better, which means that when you step your feet on the wood flooring early in the morning after a whole night of air conditioning, your feet will not feel terribly cold. Timber flooring also provides an aesthetic appeal with its distinct grains; each piece of wood plank is different from the other.
Wood flooring installation is normally done with the tongue and groove (T&G) system. Most wood flooring is Teak flooring due to its beautiful grain. Teak wood in Singapore originates from Burma and Indonesia.
Depending on the size of the wood preferred by clients, a plywood subfloor may or may not be needed, although most wood floorings do not require plywood. The bigger the wood, the more necessary a plywood subfloor is to help stabilize any natural post installation movements of the wood. In some cases where a certain height of flooring is required, plywood is also a common way to raise the floor. After installation, the timber flooring should be given some time for the adhesives to dry before sanding and varnishing. Normally the adhesives would take about one week to dry. Our valued clients can also decide how glossy or matt the final varnish is.
To save the hassle of sanding and varnishing, the idea of engineered wood flooring has been well received by the industry. Made of a top layer of solid real wood with sublayers of other wood like plywood or pine, engineered wood comes prefinished from the factory, giving the natural look once installed without the need of any sanding and varnishing. Engineered wood flooring installation is pretty much the same as solid wood flooring installation, only without the need to sand and varnish. In Singapore context, most engineered wood flooring would be engineered Teak or engineered Oak.
As the name timber flooring suggests, it is a flooring made of timber or wood. Many associates this term as parquet flooring or wood flooring, which generally means the same thing.
